Pennsbury Gems

Updated Tuesday November 22, 2016 by Demitri Pagonis.

Pennsbury Athletic Association has a long history of developing top notch softball athletes.  The area’s local high school team, the Pennsbury Falcons, have won numerous PIAA State Championships over the years.  The dedication of volunteers across all of the softball programs sanctioned by PAA have added to the historical success and point the way toward future success.

At PAA, Travel Softball suggests the following program…

The Pennsbury Travel Team(s):

The select Travel Team softball program (the Gems) offer multiple age group experiences for fastpitch softball played at a highly competitive level.  The history of these teams extends over a forty year period.  The teams are created each August after a series of tryouts.  The coaches often have no ties to the roster players.  The teams have planned training, practice, and game/tournament activities planned year round.  Extra fees are required to cover various off season practices and a range of local tournament participation.  In addition, the fields at the Fred Allan Softball Complex are routinely employed for practices, games, scrimmages, and home-sponsored tournaments.  For information on teams and upcoming tournaments, contact

The Pennsbury Invitational Tournament:

The Pennsbury Tournament was an idea conceived by Art Coleman that began with just 8 teams in 1980.  Art Coleman, who was the Pennsbury Gems coach at the time, continued to develop and work the tournament over 21 years helping to grow the number of teams participating as the Pennsbury organization grew and as the number of new fields became available. Prior to Art's untimely passing away in October of 2001 the tournament had grown to 64 teams and in addition had the NFCA holding its administered recruiting camp the day before. Les Venella and Joe Parell assumed the task of administering the tournament after Art’s death and continue to run it with the same goal; create a large venue that college coaches could attend, observe and recruit players from all over the United States and Canada.  Today over one hundred elite 18U teams will compete and showcase their talents over a three day event on over twenty fields.  For more information contact
